The Department of Public Health Sciences (PHS) at the University of Virginia seeks a postdoctoral research associate position. The successful candidate will work closely with Drs. G. Wayne Talcott, Melissa Little, and Robert Klesges, of the newly formed Center for Addiction and Prevention Research, as well as other investigators and project staff in the PHS department and Cancer Center without Walls, graduate research assistants, stakeholders from Virginia communities, Virginia residents, and the U.S. Military. The Center for Addiction and Prevention Research has a 20 year relationship with the United States Air Force, where the focus is on health promotion and disease prevention, particularly in the areas of obesity treatment, tobacco cessation , and alcohol abuse prevention. The research experiences will span a number of community- and military-based research projects that target alcohol, tobacco, obesity, and cancer initiatives. This position is based at the University of Virginia but the work site is located in San Antonio, TX, where the primary military faculty and staff are located. The initial appointment is for one year, with two years of additional funding available, contingent on applicant's interest and performance.
The successful applicant will have access to data being collected on seven National Institutes of Health (NIH) and Department of Defense (DoD) grants, both in military and civilian settings. Most projects are intervention-based, ranging from individually based telephone counseling to evaluating the impact of the built environment and changes in policy on health behaviors. The candidate will be expected to help with the execution of interventions as well as receive mentorship on publication and grant writing.
Candidates must have a PhD in behavioral sciences, nutrition, exercise science, public health, psychology, sociology or a related field by appointment start date. Must have a strong interest and experience in community-based research, including working with at-risk and diverse communities such as the United States Air Force. Expertise and training in health promotion is a must. An interest in translational science and working with a multidisciplinary team of scientists is required, as well as an interest in learning skills necessary to be competitive in NIH and DoD grantsmanship. Outstanding written and oral communication skills, including record of peer-review publications and scholarly presentations, and strong work habits and the ability to work independently and with diverse groups, are expected. Candidates must have a strong track record in cooperative work; be creative, independent, and highly motivated, with the ability to interact professionally in both research and community environments; and have strong data management and statistical analytic skills. Experience in conducting obesity, tobacco, and alcohol abuse interventions is preferable, as is experience working on federally funded research trials.
